Advocates for the deaf are pressing for measures to ensure their inclusion in the 2010 US census, both for the sake of accuracy, and for the benefit of the deaf themselves.
Without data from the census, says community advocate Patricia Ann Boyd, it is virtually impossible to find out how many deaf and hearing impaired people there are living in any given county or city, such as, say, Santa Rosa.
In an effort to compensate for the lack of materials prepared by the federal Census Bureau, Boyd took it upon herself to create this 8-minute video, with an American Sign Language interpreter, that explains the process and why it is important for deaf individuals to participate in the count.
