Century
of Change
In 1900, thousands of American citizens lived in Healdsburg
(beneath Fitch Mountain), the Alexander Valley, and
all along the Russian River. Just one hundred years
earlier, it was a vastly different place. Explore
this "century of change" and the people
who experienced it: the native Pomo and Wappo, the
visiting Russian fur traders, the settlers of the
Mexican Ranchos, and finally, the American squatters--
all of whom called this land their home.
Healdsburg
on the Map
On the Map. The story of how historic Healdsburg,
founded by an entrepreneurial squatter and pioneer
named Harmon Heald, found itself on the map-- and
remained there even after the untimely death of young
Harmon.
The
Buckle of the Prune Belt
The
Buckle of the Prune Belt. A region of great agricultural
bounty, the valleys that surround the historic town
of Healdsburg have been known for a number of crops.
But for half a century, the prune industry-- growing,
drying, and packing-- dominated the local economy.
